After I graduated college I moved to Nashville to intern for an independent record label. Out of that internship I was asked if I wanted to stay on and start getting paid. I started working two days a week, about 5 hours each day. Almost two years later I had a title “Marketing Assistant” and a pay raise. However, I was still a part-time employee working four days a week and serving to make the rest of the money i needed.
So I started Entry Level Me a blog about music. After keeping up the blog for a full year I landed a sweet job in my field, Want to know more? Read on:
In 2009 I was a qualified applicant. I didn’t think I had “paid my dues” but I certainly had the entry-level experience and knowledge to hold a Full Time job. So, What was I missing? or What was I doing wrong?
The problem I decided to tackle: Knowledge of a variety of different music, film, & entertainment companies. Sometimes when I applied for jobs I was so focused on the Record & Entertainment companies with career sites that make it simple to apply that I forget about the companies like the one I worked at. Although we weren’t hiring, we had nowhere on our website that was devoted to those interested in a career with our company. How was I to find out about jobs that my network wasn’t talking about? or that I didn’t see an ad for online?
Entry Level Me is a blog about music and my resume. Starting off each post consisted of a song and a company that I found as a result of that song/artist. I planned to inform each business of my posts about their company and also sent along my resume to any contact at that company.
The other goal of the blog, to add to my busy schedule of juggling two part time jobs, training for a marathon, and not becoming best friends with my computer. You train 18 weeks for a marathon. So for 18 Weeks I planned to research at least 100 entertainment/music/or film. Thats an average of 5-6 jobs per week! Ambitious yes! I was determined to run two marathons: One the literal 26.2 mile run and Two the ongoing Job Marathon. After 18 weeks I had turned 24, Yes, So Young…but so eager to learn and grow. Due to rain my 26.2 mile race became a 22.2 mile race which I did complete. Then a month later things started happening again for me. I was offered a job at Fueled By Ramen Records. I flipped my life upside down and moved from Nashville to New York City with 1 weeks notice to start my new job. As of June 2010 I work as the Customer Service & Ecommerce Marketing coordinator for Fueled By Ramen Records. I will continue to update this blog with music and life experiences as I train for my second marathon. This time even more determined to finish the 26.2 miles. Follow my journey here!
